Director of Strategic Fulfillment

Role Overview

This role focuses on the final, most critical stage of the studio’s workflow: ensuring that delicate glass art reaches its destination safely and on time. You will manage the entire lifecycle of a finished piece after it leaves the kiln, from inventorying and professional photography to custom crating and international shipping.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Professional Packaging & Crating

  • Custom Packing: Utilize advanced archival and protective techniques (double-boxing, foam-in-place, custom-built wooden crates) to secure high-value glass.
  • Material Selection: Select appropriate packing materials for various glass types (blown, cast, or neon) to prevent scratches, thermal shock, or structural failure.
  • Quality Control: Inspect every piece for defects before it is sealed, ensuring the client receives exactly what was ordered.

2. Logistics & Carrier Management

  • Shipping Coordination: Manage outbound shipments via USPS, FedEx, UPS, and specialized art couriers.
  • Documentation: Generate shipping labels, commercial invoices for international customs, and Certificates of Authenticity.
  • Claims Management: In the rare event of transit damage, lead the insurance claim process and coordinate with carriers for inspections.

3. Inventory & Studio Flow

  • Stock Management: Maintain a rigorous inventory of shipping supplies (boxes, bubble wrap, tape, crates) to avoid fulfillment delays.
  • Database Entry: Update the studio’s internal database/POS with tracking numbers, shipping costs, and delivery statuses.
  • Organization: Keep the “Shipping Zone” of the studio immaculate and organized to ensure a smooth workflow.

Required Skills & Experience

  • The “Tetris” Mindset: Exceptional spatial reasoning and the ability to visualize how to pack complex, irregular shapes securely.
  • Physical Capability: Comfort lifting heavy boxes (up to 50 lbs) and operating basic power tools (drills/saws) if custom crating is required.
  • High Attention to Detail: Precise labeling and documentation skills are non-negotiable—a single digit error in a zip code can be a costly mistake.
  • Tech Literacy: Proficiency with shipping software (e.g., ShipStation, Pirate Ship) and basic inventory management systems.

Shop Assistant

Role Overview

The Studio Assistant provides critical support to the lead artist in all stages of glass production. This is a physically demanding role that requires a high level of situational awareness, precision, and a commitment to shop safety. You will be responsible for ensuring the studio environment is optimized for creativity and that all equipment is maintained to professional standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Technical Production Support

  • Hot Shop/Kiln Prep: Assist with furnace charging, glass batching, and monitoring kiln cycles.
  • Gaffer Assistance: Provide “second set of hands” support during glassblowing sessions, including managing heat, handling blocks, and shielding the lead artist.
  • Cold Working: Perform finishing tasks such as grinding, polishing, sandblasting, and drilling using various lapidary equipment.

2. Studio Maintenance & Logistics

  • Safety Oversight: Maintain a spotless workspace to prevent accidents; manage hazardous materials and glass waste (cullet) disposal.
  • Tool Care: Clean and maintain pipes, punties, jacks, and shears to ensure longevity and performance.
  • Inventory: Monitor supplies of color, oxygen/gas levels, and shipping materials.

3. Administrative & Gallery Support

  • Documentation: Assist in photographing finished pieces and updating inventory logs.
  • Packing/Shipping: Carefully wrap and crate fragile glasswork for gallery delivery or client shipment.
  • Installation: Help with the setup and breakdown of exhibitions or public art installations.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Physical Stamina: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for long periods in high-temperature environments.
  • Manual Dexterity: High level of hand-eye coordination and a steady hand for delicate finishing work.
  • Safety First Mentality: Prior experience with high-heat equipment, power tools, or industrial workshop settings is highly preferred.
  • Adaptability: The ability to anticipate the lead artist’s needs without constant verbal instruction—essential for the fast-paced flow of hot glass work.
  • Reliability: Strict adherence to schedules, especially regarding kiln timings and furnace maintenance.
